On July 18, 1996, Shaquille O’Neal agreed on a lucrative deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, turning his back on the Orlando Magic as a free agent. The Magic had it in hand to hold one of the most dominant centers of all time. Only they played their cards completely wrong – in contrast to the Los Angeles Lakers.
“Is Shaquille O’Neal worth $ 115 million over seven years?” With this question on the front page the Orlando Sentinel In mid-July 1996 to his readership, primarily fans of the Orlando Magic. A little more than 5000 people register by telephone with the daily newspaper , which publishes the result a few days later.
The answer to this simple question is clear – but not as you would expect it to be almost a quarter of a century later. A whopping 91.3 percent of callers vote for a clear “No”. On average $ 16.4 million a year for just one player? “Crazy,” a caller sums up the idea.
At the end of the 1990s, this is an almost unimaginable salary for a basketball professional Sentinel Deal under discussion in times of an ever increasing salary cap (at least until before the corona crisis) almost like a mess. Especially for a player of a Shaq caliber.
The Big Diesel was a beast even then. In his first four years in the Association in the jersey of the Orlando Magic, O’Neal maltreated his opponents in rows, his yield of 27.2 points, 12.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocks at 58.1 percent from the field can do more than let see.
The center did not dismantle in the years that followed. On the contrary. He became one of the best big men ever to dominate the NBA zones, won a total of four championships, won three MVP finals. The Magic let this player go in the summer of 1996. Because they’re too stingy.
Shaquille O’Neal: Hollywood instead of pinstripes
In the person of Shaq, the Magic lose the actor who actually only established the franchise on the map of the NBA. The team from Florida was not launched until 1989, but the No. 1 pick from 1992 led the team from the city of just under 290,000 to a meteoric rise already in the early 90s.
Together with Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, who joins the team as a No. 3 pick a year after Shaq, the 2.16-meter colossus leads the Magic to the finals in the sixth year of its existence. On the way there they even clear a certain Michael Jordan out of the way. But the 1995 finals are lost, a year later MJ takes a sweep at Orlando in the east finals.
The Magic’s soaring is over – for a long, long time, which nobody could have guessed at the time. Only a year after the greatest triumph of the franchise history at that time, the preliminary low point was waiting on July 18, 1996: Shaq signs as a free agent with the Los Angeles Lakers. Hollywood instead of Disney World . Title hunt in purple and gold instead of pinstripes.
NBA – The best duos in history: Four fists for an alleluia-
1/27
Together with John Stockton, Karl Malone formed one of the best duos in the entire association for jazz in the 80s and 90s. SPOX looks back at the most ingenious combos in NBA history.
2/27
They are probably the forefathers of the one-two-punch: Bill Russell and Bob Cousy won six titles in seven years, both came in honor of MVP. Together they dominated both ends of the court and founded the legend of the Celtics.
3/27
Wilt and West: Two of the best players ever. The tactics of the two were quite simple: When West was hot, there were no opponents for the Guard, Chamberlain took care of the rest with his inhuman physique under the basket.
4/27
The need was great when Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson headed for the opposing defense: For four years, two of the best players of all time stood side by side and won an NBA championship.
5/27
They shaped the golden age of the Knicks: Walter Frazier and Willis Reed. Clyde’n’Captain brought the only NBA trophies to date to the Big Apple. While Fraizier was known for his elegant playing style, Reed was long considered the toughest dog in the NBA.
6/27
After Russell and Cousy resigned, Boston revived through John Havlicek and Dave Cowens. While Cowens was an outstanding rebounder, Havlicek was considered as versatile as LeBron James today.
7/27
After Jerry and Wilt there were Magic and Kareem. They finally missed Purple-and-Gold’s eternal top franchise status by reaching the finals eight times in 10 years. Showtime stands for Magic and Kareem.
8/27
The biggest opponents of the Showtime Lakers were the Celtics around Larry Bird and Kevin McHale. Together they dominated the East for around ten years, and there were three titles. The high basketball IQ of the Celtics icons could break down every defense into individual parts.
9/27
Julius Erving repeatedly failed due to the Lakers and therefore needed help. It finally came in the person of Moses Malone. The duo overran the NBA in the first year and scored an average of 45.9 points. The crowning glory was the title in 1983.
10/27
John Stockton and Karl Malone played a total of 1142 games on the Hardwood. The duo is still considered the best pick’n’roll combo ever. 13 seasons, more than 50 victories were won, only the title failed (because of MJ).
11/27
With their “Bad Boys” Dumars and Thomas drove the NBA crazy, they were the first team to sweep the Showtime Lakers and formed one of the best backcours of all time. Makes two titles together.
12/27
Before MJ became the best ever, many doubted his ability to win titles. Then came Pippen, the rest is history. Superior to almost any team in defense, the two are considered by many to be the best combo of all time.
13/27
Had the Bulls not existed, perhaps the 1990s would have been Payton and Kemp’s decade. The best defender on the one and the athletic wonder Kemp could hardly be stopped over 7 years. Injuries prevented long-term success.
14/27
Shaq and Penny Hardaway were the future of the league at the beginning of 1990 and made it to the finals with their crazy athleticism. Then Shaq went to LA while Hardaway was thrown back and forth by injuries.
15/27
204-124 is the joint assessment of Charles Barkley and Kevin Johnson. The Suns duo were known for their fast and unyielding style of play and made it to the finals together – only then was it against the Bulls.
16/27
Already in college, Olajuwon and Drexler swept over their opponents. It was only in the mid-1990s that they were reunited and immediately took the pot. In the 1995 playoffs, the duo scored an average of 53.
17/27
A year later, after Shaq joined the Lakers, the franchise drafted a cheeky high school kid: Kobe Bryant. Even if you weren’t always green, at the turn of the millennium, no team was able to hold their own against the two.
18/27
To date, Duncan and Parker don’t know what it feels like to miss the playoffs. Both players are considered to be very introverted and modest, but when it comes to success, there is hardly any better.
19/27
J-Will and C-Webb didn’t stay together for very long, but this time was pure spectacle. Behind-the-back, crashing dunks, crazy layups – the Kings had their very own Showtime team around the 2000s.
20/27
Kobe also had a second companion, who went to the top with him. Gasol got on with Bryant almost blindly and was made for the LA triangle offense due to his strong passing.
21/27
Run’n’Gun: Under this title, the Suns whirled through the NBA under D’Antoni. Steve Nash as a brilliant floor general including MVP honors and Amar’e Stoudemire, who was long considered the fastest big man in the NBA.
22/27
Even before the collaboration in Miami, Wade and LeBron James were considered good friends. The friendship of the two future Hall of Famers was finally gilded with two trophies.
23/27
From 2008 to 2016 there was a tremendous thunder in OKC. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook are among the best scorers of all time. They stood together four times at least in the Western Conference Finals – before KD joined another duo …
24/27
There has never been a combo that has such downtown firepower. Curry and Thompson led the dubs to multiple titles and the best season ever. Together, the Splash Brothers have a career trip average of 42.8 percent.
25/27
Chris Paul and James Harden’s marriage to the Houston Rockets lasted only two years. There has never been a better back court with two absolute Hall of Famers. The overpowering Warriors ended the title dreams in the playoffs.
26/27
New duos were created for this. The Los Angeles Lakers put LeBron James alongside Anthony Davis in summer 2019, making the glam franchise a hot title contender until the Corona interruption.
27/27
But there is another star tandem in LA. The Clippers united Kawhi Leonard and Paul George in the Free Agency 2019. There have been no such strong players on the wing since MJ and Pippen at the Bulls.

Extension with Shaq? Orlando Magic has it in hand
The Magic had it in their own hands to hold Shaq. When the then 24-year-old became a free agent for the first time in his career in the summer of 1996, there were no regulations regarding a maximum salary or an expensive luxury tax if the salary cap was overdrawn ($ 24.4 million for the 1996/97 season). Both are only recorded in the CBA after the lockout in 1998.
The center itself is initially not averse to extending the contract in Orlando. The Magic hold it Bird rights for Shaq may therefore extend with your player, even if the new contract would exceed the salary cap. If the offer fits, The Big Aristotle can imagine a quick signature. Only: the offer does not fit at all.
The Magic put an offer of $ 54 million on the table for four years, as Joel Corry later added CBS Sports remind. Corry then worked as a consultant for Shaq’s agent Leonard Armato and was involved in the negotiations. The first offer may be half of what O’Neal and his team imagined.
At the same time, Alonzo Mourning and Juwan Howard receive significantly better contracts with more than $ 100 million over seven years from the Heat and Wizards – a lower endowment than the two, in his eyes, less talented competitors, is out of the question for Shaq.

Hanebüchene review: Orlando Magic scare away Shaq
But instead of fulfilling the wishes of the franchise star, the Magic managers try to downplay Shaq’s value. “The most confusing part of the conversation, I will never forget, was when the Magic started criticizing O’Neal’s rebounding and defense. Are you going to hug me?” Said Corry in retrospect.
Another Magic argument: In a few years, an extension of the contract with Penny Hardaway is waiting for the team, you have to maintain a certain financial flexibility. Shaq feels twice stepped on the tie. On the one hand the outrageous criticism of his game, on the other hand he did not seem to enjoy full priority among those responsible.
Unsurprisingly, the superstar’s dissatisfaction calls on the competition, especially the Los Angeles Lakers with general manager Jerry West. The Lakers legend knows how to advertise the traditional Hollywood franchise. Shaq could follow in the footsteps of big men legends like George Mikan, Wilt Chamberlain or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. And, of course, to advance his acting career.
Armato supposedly wanted to guide his client to the Lakers anyway. In Hollywood’s glitz and glamor, the superstar can expect significantly more advertising presence and more opportunities to earn money than in the comparatively tranquil Orlando.
