On March 8, the St. Galleners elect a new cantonal parliament. Marcel Toeltl (58) is on the list of the SVP district party Rheintal. An SVP politician who can be described as a “Nazi sympathizer” like that “St. Galler Tagblatt » reported. The Federal Supreme Court decided this in summer 2017 after a case about racism allegations had previously dealt with several instances.
–
Accordingly, Toeltl had written in blog entries and tweets that people of certain ethnic groups had “a very deep country IQ”. In another post he had spoken of “white people” who are exterminating themselves because of rampant homosexuality, while “non-white people are multiplying as much as they can”.
The trigger for the court decision was the testimony of a former GLP politician who called Toeltl a “confessing racist and Nazi sympathizer”. The SVP man sued for defamation – and flashed off.
–
Toeltl was admonished by the SVP cantonal party because of the court decision. And a few months later he resigned as president of the SVP St. Margrethen party. However, there were no further consequences.

Computer scientist and father of two
SVP Rheintal has now put the IT specialist on the election list. «My focus is clearly on maintaining our values, our culture and our achievements. We owe this to our ancestors and even more so to our children, »he writes on his homepage about his candidacy.
–
«I don’t want to have to explain to my children one day why we just watched and did nothing. If you rob a country of its identity and culture, your home will be lost », says the father of two.

SVP cantonal president: “No candidate of choice”
SVP cantonal president Walter Gartmann (51) doesn’t like it at all. “The candidacy is extremely unfortunate and not good – absolutely no candidate,” he says to BLICK. “If I had known about it earlier, I would have sought a conversation with the district party.”
–
The topic would surely be put on the agenda at the next party management meeting. “However, our hands are tied, the district parties decide on the nominations.”
–
However, Gartmann makes it clear: “I do not tolerate right-wing extremist ideas in our party.” A conversation with Toeltl was sought in 2017, after which he withdrew from the party functions. Since then he has also behaved relatively calmly. “So he deserves a second chance.”
–
«But we will certainly observe exactly how he behaves. If there is another incident, I will intervene – I promise, »says Gartmann, who is celebrating his 51st birthday today.

Candidacy in 2016 had no chance
At best, the problem in the elections will also take care of itself. Toeltl had already run for the St. Gallen cantonal council in 2016 – unsuccessfully. Of the 17 candidates on the list, he ended up in last place with 4,716 votes. His chances of election are unlikely to have increased in the meantime.

What Toeltl himself says about his candidacy remains open. A VIEW request was initially unanswered.
