Nawal Saadawi, Muslim Marxist Who Has Been Imprisoned and Condemned by Egyptian Religious Leaders

KAIRO – Nawal el-Saadawi, a famous Muslim Marxist, feminist, psychiatrist and novelist Egypt , had died in Cairo at the age of 89 on Sunday.

His various writings have generated controversy for decades in conservative Egyptian society. He died due to health problems related to advancing age.

Egyptian Minister of Culture Inas Abdel-Dayem, as quoted AFP, Tuesday (23/3/2021), mourning the death of Saadawi. He said the novelist’s writing had created a great intellectual movement.

Born in October 1931 in the village of the Nile Delta, Saadawi studied medicine at Cairo University. He worked as a psychiatrist and university lecturer and wrote dozens of books. He is also a regular writer for Egyptian newspapers.

As a defender of women’s rights in Egypt and the Arab world, her writing focuses primarily on feminism, domestic violence against women, and religious extremism.

She was the vocal contender of female genital mutilation in Egypt and around the world.
