Leonid Volkovteam leader of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalnyrecently died in a Russian prison, reported having been the victim of an attack with a hammer near his home in Vilnacapital of Lithuaniaof which he directly accused the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.

«They wanted to make a steak of me. With a meat mallet, a person in the yard of the house, on the ground, hit me about fifteen times on the leg. “The leg for some reason was left whole.”he said in a video published on his Telegram account.

He said he was not prepared at the moment to comment, “apart from the fact that it is evident that it was a criminal greeting, typical, characteristic of Putin, of criminal St. Petersburg.”

«Vladímir Vladimirovich (Putin’s patronym), I also send you greetings»he added.

Regarding the injuries, he noted that it hurts when he walks, but that they have told him that there is no fracture, although he did break his arm.

«It will pass. The most important thing is that we are going to work and we are not going to give up,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Lithuanian Foreign Minister, Gabrielius Landsbergisreferred on his X account to “the news about Leonid’s aggression”, which he described as “shocking”.

«The competent authorities are working. The perpetrators will have to answer for their crime,” he wrote.

According to local media and Volkov’s own account of the attack, he was hit several times with a hammer and suffered a broken arm, and the attackers also sprayed him with gas.

Navalny’s close collaborator has been living in Lithuania for some time.

News of the attack on Volkov was the top story in the Lithuanian media on Wednesday, with photos of police and emergency vehicles near the scene of the incident and of Volkov in his hospital bed. EFE (I)
