The National Reference Laboratory for Acute Respiratory Infections of the National Health Laboratory (LNS) has developed a new training program for health professionals to enable them to participate in large-scale screening activities for SARS-CoV-2 using nasolabial / oropharyngeal swabs.
In response to the COVID-19 crisis, the LNS Department of Microbiology has established a clinical outreach team led by Dr Tamir Abdelrahman. The team recruited around twenty nurses who took part in various activities, including those of the LNS COVID-19 sampling center in Dudelange itself, those of the COVID-19 consultation center in Kirchberg as well as screening. school in collaboration with the Ministry of National Education, Children and Youth (MENJE). Dr Tamir Abdelrahman explains: “The training program has been put in place to ensure the high level of service offered by the team. It is organized periodically for all new hires and is subject to regular audits to verify that best practices are in place. As it was recently recognized as an official training program by the Ministry of Health, we will offer it as a certified training program at the request of any partner. “
The training program was designed by Dr Trung-Nguyen Nguyen, head of the virology service, who explains: “The service met the requirements of the health authorities published in November 2020. It includes a two-hour theoretical part, covering the anatomy and physiology of the ENT sphere and the microbiological aspects of screening for SARS-CoV-2, while the practical training of the sampling gesture is carried out under the supervision of a qualified and experienced health professional for four hours in our COVID-19 screening center in Dudelange. “
Marie Leick, project manager of the department that organizes the practical module of the program, adds: “In order to guarantee the quality of the training, the nasopharyngeal sampling procedure has been broken down into several themes. In addition, the importance of respecting the rules of identity and vigilance, confidentiality, hygiene and waste disposal is underlined, after which follows a demonstration of sampling equipment and personal protective equipment. “
