NASA’s Updated Schedule of Manned Missions to the International Space Station (ISS) – Crew-8, Starliner CFT, Crew-9, and More

Today, NASA presented an updated schedule of manned missions to the International Space Station (ISS). This plan was created after negotiations with representatives of the companies SpaceX and Boeing, which are to provide transportation of astronauts to the station in the Crew Dragon and Starliner spacecrafts as part of the CCP (Commercial Crew Program). The piloted test mission update of the latter ship is probably the most anticipated part of the current update. In addition to the mentioned CFT test mission, you will also find information about the Crew-8 and Crew-9 missions in this article.

Crew-8
NASA expects the Crew-8 mission to depart for the orbital complex in mid-February next year. The mission commander will be American Matthew Dominick (prime minister), his compatriot Michael Barratt (third mission in his life) will be the pilot, the position of mission specialists will be taken by American Jeanette Epps (prime minister) and Russian Alexander Grebjonkin (prime minister). On the ISS, the crew will be engaged in traditional activities related to research and keeping the station running. The Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon are already being prepared for this mission. The crew is expected to return to Earth at the end of August 2024 after a short time spent on the ISS with Crew-9.

Starliner Crew Flight Test (CFT)
The first manned mission of the Starliner ship is planned for mid-April of next year at the earliest (until recently there was talk of March at the earliest). Barry Wilmore (third flight in life) and Sunita Williams (third flight in life) will be on board the ship and their task will be to comprehensively examine the capabilities and capabilities of the Starliner ship’s systems. An Atlas V rocket will take care of its launch from the ramp at Cape Canaveral, and the Starliner should remain in place for about eight days after docking with the ISS. It will then return to Earth and the reentry cabin will land on parachutes and an airbag in the desert of the western United States. NASA promises to provide an update on the readiness of the CFT mission as more information becomes available.

Crew-9
For now, NASA and SpaceX plan to launch this mission in mid-August at the earliest. It will be NASA’s ninth mission designed to rotate crews to the station. The composition of the four-man crew will be announced at a later date.

10th rotation mission
The tenth anniversary mission from the CCP program is currently planned for the beginning of 2025. NASA is currently considering two options for this time slot – either SpaceX will fly on the Crew-10 mission, or Boeing will fly on the Starliner-1 mission. The Starliner-1 mission timeline was adjusted to allow enough time to evaluate the lessons learned during the CFT test mission, incorporate the findings, approve the final certification, and complete the pre-mission readiness assessment and certification.
