NASA’s Orion capsule prepares to orbit the Moon

The Orion capsule carries 3 simulated crews.

REPUBLIC.CO.ID, WASHINGTON — The United States Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has reached a milestone in history artemis mission 1. NASA sends sending capsules Orion around the moon. In this mission, NASA tested the strength of the capsule as it circled the moon.

On Monday (11/21/2022), Orion approached the Moon, losing signal while completing a lunar flyby (lunar flyby). Reported by BGR extensionTuesday (11/22/2022), Orion is the culmination of years of work by engineers NASA as well as commercial and international partners.

With Orion last week, scientists waited to see how the mission would turn out. Because the Orion space capsule is expected to go into orbit for a week around the Moon over the weekend. If Orion succeeds in its mission, scientists are one step closer to returning humans to the Moon.

Artemis’ mission

Artemis is named after the ancient Greek goddess of hunting and twin sister of Apollo. The project aims to return astronauts to the lunar surface as early as 2025.

Flying the SLS-Orion spacecraft is a major obstacle for the ambitious Artemis program. Its first flight intended to subject the vehicle to rigorous flight tests, pushing the limits of its design to demonstrate that the spacecraft was suitable for astronaut flight.

Orion carried a crew of three simulations, one male and two female dummies equipped with sensors to measure radiation levels and other stresses the astronauts would experience.

The primary goal is to test the durability of Orion’s heat shield during reentry as it hits Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of 39,429 km per hour, or 32 times the speed of sound when returning from lunar orbit. The heat shield is designed to resist re-entry friction which is expected to raise the temperature outside the capsule to nearly 2,760 degrees Celsius.
