A box called MOXIE developed by Perserverance belonging to the US Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has succeeded in producing oxygen from the air of the planet Mars.

The development of this technology has been carried out since 2021. Currently the box has produced 122 grams of oxygen, an amount sufficient to supply a small dog’s breathing needs for 10 hours.

Quoting from Science AlertMOXIE, which is short for Mars Oxgen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment, has been attached to the Perseverance spacecraft since February 2021.

Since then, the suitcase-sized box has produced oxygen for the 16th and final time aboard NASA’s Perseverance rover. This oxygen production meant that this device proved much more successful than expected by its creators at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

“MOXIE’s impressive performance shows that extracting oxygen from the Martian atmosphere is possible – oxygen that could help supply breathable air or rocket fuel for future astronauts,” said NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy, quoted from the page. NASA.

“Developing technologies that allow us to use resources on the Moon and Mars is critical to establishing a long-term presence on the Moon, creating a strong Lunar economy, and allowing us to support human exploration campaigns to Mars,” he added.

MOXIE total has produced a total of 122 grams of oxygen which is roughly equivalent to what a small dog breathes in 10 hours.

At its most efficient period, MOXIE is capable of producing 12 grams of oxygen per hour with a purity level of 98 percent or better. This result is more than twice NASA’s initial target for the instrument.

On the 16th flight on August 7, which was MOXIE’s last flight, this instrument produced 9.8 grams of oxygen.

MOXIE successfully completed all its technical requirements and operated in a variety of conditions for a full year on Mars, so the developers of this instrument were able to learn a lot about this technology.

“We are proud to support breakthrough technologies like MOXIE that can transform local resources into useful products for future exploration missions,” said Trudy Kortes, director of technology demonstrations, Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

“By proving this technology in real-world conditions, we are one step closer to a future where astronauts ‘live off the land’ on the Red Planet,” he added.

For your information, MOXIE produces molecular oxygen through an electrochemical process that separates one oxygen atom from each carbon dioxide molecule pumped from the thin Martian atmosphere. As these gases flow through the system, they are analyzed to check the purity and quantity of oxygen produced.
