NASA to release first cosmic images from the James Webb Space Telescope – ANTARA News Riau Islands

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The US Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Friday (8/7) local time said that the first cosmic photo from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will contain images of the farthest galaxies, bright nebulae, and giant gas planets that far.

The Webb Telescope is a collaborative project between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). The Hubble successor telescope is said to be revealing new insights into the origins of the universe. Observations from this project will be released on July 12.

“I’m really looking forward to revealing the results, it would be a huge relief,” Klaus Pontoppidan, an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STSI) who oversees Webb, told AFP last week.

The first part of the photo released will include the Carina Nebula, an enormous cloud of dust and gas 7,600 light-years away, and the Southern Ring Nebula, which surrounds a faint star 2,000 light-years away.

Webb has also performed spectroscopy or light analysis that reveals detailed information on the gas giant WASP-96 b, which was discovered in 2014. Nearly 1,150 light-years from Earth, WASP-96 b has about half the mass of Jupiter and orbits its star in just 3, 4 days.

Next up is Stephan’s Quintet, a group of galaxies 290 million light-years away. NASA says four of the five galaxies are locked in a “cosmic dance” of repeated close encounters.
