NASA Launches Rocket to Study Mysterious Phenomena in the Arctic

Indonesiainside.id, Washington—The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launches a rocket into the Arctic on a mission to uncover ‘strange events’ that frequently occur in the region, reports Daily Star. This strange occurrence triggers interference with radio signals, slows the movement of spacecraft, and even violates the laws of physics.

It happens every day around noon where there is an open ‘hole’ in the magnetic field in the sky just above the North Pole. For 20 years, the incident caused interference with radio signals and global positioning systems (GPS) in addition to slowing the movement of the spacecraft.

Through a mission called CREX-2, NASA will investigate holes that allow harmful solar winds to enter Earth’s atmosphere. “At about 402 kilometers (km) above Earth, the spacecraft felt like it was heavy and like it was dragging a weight or like breaking a hump, causing its speed to drop,” said NASA physicist and CREX-2 mission investigator Mark Conde.

Conde added that during the CREX-2 mission, the rocket would ‘fire’ 20 barrels of jet fuel which would release glowing vapors in the sky. The goal is that the fuel can produce a sketch in the air as well as provide an overview of how the air moves in the polar regions to reveal this phenomenon.

“We have about an hour or two each day for the right time to do this experiment,” Conde added.

During the mission, a group of scientists and students will be stationed throughout Iceland, Svalbard and other Scandinavian regions to photograph the ‘light show’. (NE)
