NASA launches a contest to create … Toilets!

L’US space agency launches a competition open to everyone to help them create the next bathroom used on the Moon.

A total of 35 000 $ (US) will be given to people who can help NASA design the next toilet used by mission astronauts Artemis.

From 2024, a new cohort of astronauts is to return to the Moon. Among the challenges facing NASA engineers, there are some who are more down to earth than others …

It is in this context that the Agency announces a design competition for the next toilet that must be able to operate in an environment where the gravity is six times less than on Earth. Sunday DIYers or Seasoned Scientists Must Submit Their Ideas by August 17 next.

Among the aspects of the project to take into account, for the first time in the lunar conquest, women will stay on the Moon. Future toilets must therefore be able to accommodate men and women.

NASA wants the design of the toilet to be able to conserve water to “help maintain a clean, odorless, and contaminant-free environment.”

Physical space and weight are also to be considered. The toilet must weigh less than 15 kg and do less than 0.12 cubic meter.

The winners of this contest will receive $ 20,000 in cash, the second $ 10,000 and the third $ 5,000. The winners will be announced in October.
