NASA Finds Rocks With Olivine Minerals on Mars

Rock samples on Mars have sparked a lot of speculation.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WASHINGTON — The American Space Agency’s (NASA) Perseverance rover has expanded its collection of Martian rocks. The rover has successfully collected other samples and rocks Mars has sparked some scientific speculation.

“Another little piece of Mars to take with me,” Rover Perseverance tweeted Tuesday (16/11). CNET, Thursday (18/11).

“My latest sample comes from a rock laden with minerals olivine greenery, and there are some ideas among my science team about how it got there,” he added.

The rover’s Twitter account went on to say, “The hypothesis has flown!” and added, “The rules of science.” If you are familiar with the green gemstone peridot, then you have seen an example of how olivine can appear on Earth. Olivine is a common mineral in the upper mantle of our planet.

The Perseverance rover collected small pieces of Mars and placed them in sample tubes for safekeeping. It’s possible that scientists on Earth can get hold of rocks containing olivine in the future. NASA is developing a mission to sample the rover and bring it back to Earth for study in the 2030s.

Olivine has been found in some interesting places in outer space. Dawn’s Mission NASA unexpectedly spotted minerals in craters on the giant asteroid Vesta. The Curiosity rover, which was exploring other regions of Mars, found olivine “fingerprints” in Martian soil samples.

The Perseverance rover first spent some time investigating the layered rock it sampled by scraping the surface and examining what lay beneath. Perseverance had a limited number of sample tubes, so the team selected attractive candidates for the collection.

NASA did not elaborate on the outstanding olivine hypothesis. However, we can expect a lot of analysis when researchers analyze these rocks.

Rover Perseverance lands in Lake Lake on Mars in February 2021. The location is believed to be able to tell about the history of Mars in the past.

The Jazero Crater, which was once the location of the lake 3.7 billion years ago, is like an ancient time capsule. Scientists believe the Jazero Crater can tell scientists how rocks were formed and what the climate was like at that time. This can give a big picture of what lakes and river deltas would look like when the planet was warmer and wetter and potentially habitable.
