Technologue.id, Jakarta – New animation from the United States space agency, NASA shows how small our solar system is compared to the giant black holes in outer space.
As is known, a black hole is a point in outer space where gravity is so strong, even light cannot escape its pull. Even though we can’t see anything inside them, we can learn about black holes from what’s around them.

Observing black holes, researchers found that matter accelerates and emits energy as it approaches the black hole, then a bright ring forms around the black hole.
Researchers estimate that there are 40 billion billion (40 quintillion or 40,000,000,000,000,000,000) black holes in the universe. Of the billions of black holes, so far those that have been detected are relatively small (three times the mass of the sun) to supermassive (tens of billions of solar masses).
To help explain the size of black holes, NASA created an animation that compares the sizes of 10 supermassive black holes to our Solar System.
Black holes are arranged according to the size of their shadow. The smallest black hole is located at the center of a galaxy known as 1601+3113 and has a mass of only 100,000 Suns.

The black hole at the center of our own galaxy, Sagittarius A*, is intermediate in size, with a mass of 4.3 million Suns. Meanwhile, the largest black hole in the animation, TON 618, is equivalent to 60 billion suns.
