Nancy Cramton-Brophy charged with murder

The trial of a novelist who once wrote an essay entitled “How to Murder Your Husband” began on Monday, April 4, in the state of Oregon in the United States.

Author Nancy Crampton-Brophy (71) is accused of shooting her husband, chef Daniel Brophy, reports The Independent.

According to The Independent Prosecutors say she killed her husband to collect about $ 1.5 million. This corresponds to NOK 13 million.

Died in 2018

Brophy’s body was found by a colleague in a kitchen at the Oregon Culinary Institute in June 2018, with one gunshot wound to the back and another to the chest.

Crampton-Brophy told investigators she had been home the entire time.

But in September 2018, she was arrested and charged with the murder of her husband. She denies criminal guilt for the charges against her.

Crampton-Brophy was once a renowned novelist who published books such as “Wrong Love” and “Wrong Husband”, and in 2011 wrote the essay “How to Murder Your Husband” for the blog See Jane Publish.

– Everyone has it in them

– As a romantic suspense writer, I spend a lot of time thinking about murder and consequently the police procedure. After all, if the murder is meant to set me free, I will certainly not spend any time in prison, she wrote in the essay.

And she added:

– It is easier to wish people dead, than to actually kill them. But what I do know about murder is that each of us has it in us when they are pushed far enough.

– Sad news to tell

Crampton-Brophy took to Facebook on June 3, 2018 to tell family, friends and acquaintances about the murder of her husband.

“I have sad news to tell my Facebook friends and family. My husband and best friend, Chef Dan Brophy was killed yesterday morning. I’m struggling to understand everything right now “, she wrote at the time.

Opportunity for 1.5 million

The couple had been married for 26 years when the murder took place.

Days after the murder, the prosecutor says that Crampton-Brophy requested a letter stating that she was not a suspect in the case, so that she could be paid 40,000 dollars for her husband’s death.

Investigators later found out she could collect $ 350,000 in life insurance after Brophy’s death.

In 2020, when several documents in the case were found, the prosecution revealed that the couple was under financial pressure and that Crampton-Brophy could earn 1.5 million dollars on the death.

– She planned and carried out what she thought was the perfect murder. A murder that she thought would free her from financial despair and let her enter a life of security and excitement, said Rod Underhill, the then District Attorney for Multnomah County in the 2020 case.

The defense lawyer: – The economy deteriorated

Crampton-Brophy’s defense lawyer Lisa Maxfield, is aware that her finances deteriorated after Brophy’s death, which speaks against one of the main arguments for the prosecution’s justification for motive.

Maxfield has also stated that Crampton Brophy lost a good listener, a fantastic lover, a perfect cook and a real life partner, writes Oregon Live.

“I ask you to look at the most powerful proof of all: your love,” said the defense attorney.

“My client had no reason to kill her husband,” Maxfield said.

The trial against the 71-year-old began on Monday this week and is estimated to last for seven weeks, reports CBS News.
