Mysterious, Rare and Watch Nintendo Game Discovered at Auction

Yahoo Auctions in Japan recently made headlines in the collecting community when it offered to buy a Nintendo Game & Watch that was so rare that many people were convinced it was a fake.

As a Nintendo fan and author the unreasonable Nintendo history Florent G. book serieskeyboard In the video below, he explains that this particular game and watch are available in a regular store Donkey Kong square, but on the top panel was an image of three men, along with a commemorative note about Nintendo’s sale of 20 million Game & Watch devices.

These tones have been seen before in other rare games and watches, but the presence of the three men here made this special unit so mysterious. One was Nintendo legend Junpei Yokoi, but the other two – Momos and Ishida – were completely anonymous, apparently not Nintendo employees.

This fact, the style of the illustration, and a few other little things — like the lack of a serial number — convinced many people that the device was a fake, but like GOrges explains that after some research, it appears that the unit was probably legitimate, and incredibly rare.

The three men are drawn by the legendary artist Makoto Kano (who worked on everything from the original metroid to me Pokemon Stadion), and after some digging by GOrges and some friends discovered that the other two weren’t Nintendo employees, but co-producers of the Game & Watch hardware. Momoz was a manager of the factory that produced the aluminum plates in every game and watch, while Ishida was an employee of that factory and was Nintendo’s direct contact.
