Vincent Kompany was at a press conference on Monday following the announcement of the end of his playing career and the start of that of Anderlecht’s coach. The opportunity for the now ex-Red Devil to explain this new change at the head of the Mauves.
“This is the start of a new stage, also ending an exceptional adventure that began at 17 with this Anderlecht club and the national team,” said Kompany. “I suffered a lot physically, but I came back every time. But it was enough now, I was ready to stop. “
“I came here knowing that the situation was very difficult, with the objective of giving back its identity to this Anderlecht club in addition to results on the pitch. The dual role was not ideal. I want to continue with the team, every week and without injury. The club will be in better shape after me than it was before I arrived. And it is very positive. There will be a clear identity. I want a real football culture from Anderlecht. The ambition is to win the title. Which coach who arrives at Anderlecht can introduce himself without talking about the title? It could be this year, or the next, or later. “
“It was not this last injury that precipitated this decision. I was no longer close to an injury. I constantly question myself. I wanted what was best for the club and the players. Things had to be clear. As soon as I felt it was the right thing (to become a coach) to do, I did it immediately, ”he said. “My biggest goal, even beyond winning the Euro with the Red Devils, is to give everything I have to Anderlecht, which is hungry to win everything and which is like a small nation. In fact, the decision was made after the first day. The truth is not always so clear. The goal is always to do well. My role makes more sense now. I’m in the right place for the first time, ”said Kompany, not forgetting to thank Franky Vercauteren who was“ a very good partner in helping me develop ”.
Asked about his fondest memories as a player, Vincent Kompany dissociated the national team and his club career. “With the Devils, it’s the match against Brazil (2-1 victory in the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup). In club, it is the goal of Agüero in the 93rd minute against QPR which gives us the first title with Manchester City (in 2012) ”.
Kompany ruled out the possibility of honoring a 90th and final milestone with the Red Devils, a way of saying goodbye to supporters. “Roberto Martinez knew that if I had made up my mind I wouldn’t go back on it. The last chapter of the book has been written. For me it’s good, I’m happy. I hope Roberto will remain at the head of the Devils for at least 10 more years. He will always have my support. We leave each other with the most beautiful memories ”.
