MV-Werften: No further details on possible layoffs | NDR.de – news

Status: December 3rd, 2020 2:33 p.m.

The management of the crisis-ridden MV shipyards answered questions from the economic and finance committee of the state parliament. Details of possible layoffs were not given. Construction continues on two ships.

The location of the MV shipyards with their locations in Warnemünde, Stralsund and Wismar has once again occupied the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The economic and finance committees wanted to find out more about the situation at the shipyard group in a joint meeting on Thursday. According to the shipyard’s managing directors Peter Fetten and Carsten Haake, the intention is to continue building the two ships currently under construction – taking into account the Corona distance requirements and with fewer staff. The 342-meter-long cruise ship “Global 1” is currently being built in Wismar and the 165-meter-long luxury expedition yacht “Crystal Endeavor” is being built in Stralsund.

No details of possible layoffs

As it was also said, the shipyard group’s order volume collapsed in the course of the corona pandemic. Fewer ships would now be built and fewer workers would be required. Fetten and Haake did not mention details of the layoffs in the room – we are talking about around 1,200 of the total of 3,200 jobs and not taking on trainees. After the discussions in the committees, the management said that the main thing now is that the federal government and Genting find a good solution so that the ships can continue to be built – with government support. “We remain optimistic and continue to work on the projects. We do what we do best: build ships,” said Haake.

Glawe is hoping for an appraisal this year

In order to get out of the crisis, the MV shipyards want money from the state. In total, the loans are worth 575 million euros. The federal government has already approved almost 200 million euros. However, there are still no reports that certify the Genting Group, to which the MV values belong, an economic perspective. Economy Minister Harry Glawe (CDU) said after the talks that he hoped that the reports on the future prospects that had been outstanding for months would be available this year as announced. The minister sees shipyard owner Genting Hong Kong on the train. “We finally expect clear statements as to when the report on the future of the group will come and what contribution Genting itself will make to save the shipyards.” According to Glawe, the President of the Genting Group, Colin Au, is expected to hold further talks in Berlin and Schwerin in the coming week.

“Find the best possible solution”

“There are a couple of thousand jobs attached to it – and they have to be preserved, however,” said Stefan Schad, negotiator of IG Metall coast. Unions, shipyard management and the state government would stay on the ball, Schad continued. “My basic impression is that things will continue at the shipyards,” said Henning Foerster from the left-wing parliamentary group. The regrettable downsizing is part of a restructuring process and, given the current background, is unlikely to be averted. “That is why it is now a matter of finding the best possible solutions for the colleagues concerned.”

Most recently, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Finance Minister Reinhard Meyer (SPD) stated that it would be difficult to convey if the company wanted public financial aid, but at the same time was operating massive job cuts.
