Muslim scholar Tariq Ramadan to be tried for rape

Former professor oxford university who is also a Muslim scholar, Tariq Ramadanwill be tried on charges rape in Geneva, Swiss, next year. This rape case occurred more than 14 years ago, with Ramadan denying the allegations against him.

As reported AFP extensionOn Tuesday (6/12/2022), Ramadan, who is a Swiss citizen, faced a string of rape and sexual assault allegations in France and Switzerland since 2017.

The judicial authorities in Geneva said on Monday (12/5) local time that Ramadan was accused of rape and sexual coercion in the latest case. He also said that he would be tried in the Geneva criminal court. The statement confirmed a Swiss television service, RTS extension.

The accuser in this case, called “Brigitte” by local Swiss media, accused Ramadan, now 60, of brutally assaulting her on the night of October 28, 2008. The victim, who is a convert, met Ramadan one month before her autograph event.

The victim claimed that Ramadan had sexually assaulted, beaten and humiliated him in a hotel room in Geneva at the time.

The victim waited for a decade before daring to speak out and denounce Ramadan in April 2018. The victim’s lawyer, Francois Zimeray, told AFP his client was scared when he opened up about this case.

“He didn’t want revenge, but he felt relieved and put his trust in the institution,” Zimeray said.
