Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – The Freiburg Museum Natur und Mensch wants to learn more about the origin of its ethnological collection. It includes almost 3000 objects from Oceania, as the museum announced on Monday. More than 1200 pieces came from the time of German colonial rule in Oceania. A significant inventory can be traced back to the collector couple Eugen and Antonie Brandeis.

According to the information, the former imperial governor Eugen Brandeis and his wife Antonie had collected 279 objects, mainly in the Marshall Islands and Samoa. In 1901 they bequeathed this collection to what was then the Museum of Natural History and Ethnology. The aim of the project is to research the origin of these objects.

In recent years, the issue of the origin of art and other objects from the colonial era has become increasingly important. Such objects are increasingly being returned.
