A wagon grave from the Iron Age can soon be seen at Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen. The remains of the grave were found in 2018 by amateur archaeologists with a metal detector. They may face persecution.
“We are pleased that the find has been announced,” says Jos Bazelmans of the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands NOS Radio 1 News. “But we are less happy with the way it went.”
The wagon grave was found in a wetland area near Nijmegen. Hobbyists with a metal detector were looking for World War II remains and probably stumbled upon the car grave by accident.
Rules
The finders did not abide by this the rules, Bazelmans knows. For example, it is forbidden in the municipality of Heumen to work with a metal detector and they had no permission from landowner Staatsbosbeheer. “And the most important thing,” says Bazelmans. “You cannot search deeper than eight inches into the ground with a metal detector.”
