Musée de la Romanité in Nîmes Welcomes 800,000th Visitor Since Opening

On Wednesday January 10, the Musée de la Romanité in Nîmes welcomed its 800,000th visitor since its opening on June 2, 2018. A winning bet for the museum which quickly established itself among the cultural sites and must-visit places in Occitanie.

More than 800,000 visitors! In 5 and a half years since its inauguration on June 2, 2018i.e. 57 months of operation (including two years marked by the Covid health crisis having led to 10 months of closure), the Musée de la Romanité has established itself in the national landscape of history and archeology museums, in including eight major temporary exhibitions.

On average the site welcomed nearly 14,000 visitors each month. But also more than 1000 groups and more than a hundred events each year. In total, more than 170 different nationalities came to discover the Musée de la Romanité.

Its attractive and varied cultural programming throughout the year (visits, conferences, activities, participation in local events, national meetings, etc.) contributes greatly to making the museum an essential place of culture, leisure and life. .

125,000 visitors to the Musée de la Romanité in 2023

If 2023 is a mixed year in terms of attendance (less 9% compared to 2022), including 25,000 visitors who discovered the temporary exhibition “Rabbit memory. Oliver Laric » within the framework of 30 years of Carré d’Art, several reasons can explain this result. Less sustained summer tourist numbers, more spread across the national territory. The impact of the drop in purchasing power on households who are more selective about their spending. A temporary exhibition combining antiquity and contemporary art which, while it allowed audiences to cross paths and attracted new art-loving visitors, also surprised regular visitors, particularly families, who are passionate about history and archeology.

These findings are found in the 2023 typology: strengthening of foreign clientele, stability of group visitors (school and leisure) and relative decline in French clientele. The end of the year benefited from good attendance and suggests positive prospects for 2024. As indicated by the numerous group reservations and press feedback for the next exhibition “Achilles and the Trojan War” to be discovered from the April 26.

The public: who are the visitors?

One in five visitors is a foreign visitor. Foreign customers (21% of visitors) were very present this year with sustained attendance from German and Spanish customers, as in 2022. British customers were added to this, and we also noticed a significant return from American customers, for the first time in the annual top 5 of our visitors.

The boutique bookstore: the average basket down

For the first time since its opening, the boutique bookstore achieved results below expectations, which reflect the decline in visitors’ purchasing power and are reflected in the amount of the average basket. In addition, the boutique bookstore had to close its doors for a month for renovations, before reopening on December 1st.

With a new redesigned sales space, more functional, more friendly and welcoming, it now offers a more complete range of products. The boutique bookstore recorded an immediate rebound of +8% in December, which augurs well for a good year in 2024.
