In a prison in Condé-sur-Sarthe, about 250 kilometers west of Paris, a prisoner has taken two guards hostage. He has since let one of the two, a woman, go. He is now holding a man who was injured in the eye during the hostage situation.
The hostage taker is a man who is serving a long prison sentence for murder and rape.
A police mediation team also tries to free the second hostage.
Two years ago in the same prison, two employees were also taken hostage by a prisoner, with a homemade knife. The hostage situation lasted for five hours: the perpetrator was overpowered and the two employees were unharmed.
