Murder in Rivière-des-Prairies prison

A young man died of his injuries after being brutally attacked by his fellow inmates at Rivière-des-Prairies prison in Montreal earlier this week.

Sacha Shaquille Joseph, a street gang member, was attacked at lunchtime on Monday by individuals who have not yet been formally identified. He was taken to the intensive care unit of the Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur, where he died the following day.

The Sûreté du Québec’s crimes against the person investigations section now treats the event as murder.

“He didn’t deserve this,” said a knotted voice, a relative of Jospeh, noting that he was a quiet, unobtrusive person.

The young man was in preventive detention for a case of domestic violence which allegedly occurred on June 14. Because of COVID-19, he was placed in quarantine when he arrived at the Rivière-des-Prairies detention facility. This isolation period ended Monday.

As soon as he was placed with the rest of the prison population, he was seriously injured in a fight, according to what may have been learned.

He was to return to court the next day for his release investigation.
