The municipality of Smallingerland has announced an emergency ordinance for Monday evening in Drachten for fear of riots and destruction. The emergency ordinance applies from 8 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday morning.
The emergency ordinance states that calls are being made on social media to gather at various locations in the Northern Netherlands, including Drachten. “There are fears that these calls also aim to bring groups of people together to, among other things, confront the police, commit vandalism and loot shops.”
An area ban comes into effect with the emergency ordinance. This gives the police more powers to intervene in the event of imminent disturbances. The police can order anyone to leave. Violation of the emergency ordinance is punishable by a maximum of three months in prison or a fine of up to 4350 euros.
In the past week there were disturbances in several cities in the Netherlands, including Sunday evening in Leeuwarden. Officers were attacked, fireworks were lit and vandalism was caused. The unrest in the country started on Friday evening with the riots in Rotterdam.
