Forbearance Could Break Records Again

Abstention had already broken records in the first ballot. The rate remains high at every election, but in this time of coronavirus crisis, it could be even higher.

In the first round, at midday, the participation rate for the first round of municipal and community elections was estimated at 18.74% for the entire department. A lower rate than in the last municipal elections of 2014, then it was 23.23% at 12 noon, i.e. almost 4.5% difference.

In this context of the coronavirus pandemic, the abstainers should be even more numerous. The final figures will be communicated after the close of the polling stations at 6 p.m. As a reminder, in Reunion, the participation rate in the first round was 42.80%.
