Munich: cultural center denies entry to fur wearers

The Munich Kulturzentrum Bahnwärter Thiel has decided not to allow people in animal skins to access its events in the future. Since the beginning of February, the ban has been in force on the site – including the wearing of artificial fur.

“We offer a fine, selected cultural program that also deals with sustainability issues,” said Daniel Hahn from “Bahnwartter Thiel”. “Furs for which animals are only bred and tortured as a later accessory simply don’t go with it.”

Since it was not possible for the bouncer to distinguish real from fake fur, the entry ban also applies to wearers of imitations.

The German Animal Welfare Association welcomed the decision. The extension of the ban to fake fur and second-hand fur also makes sense, according to Henriette Mackensen, the specialist for species protection. Since the skins of certain animal species are cheaper or at least as cheap as fake fur, depending on their origin, real fur is often used secretly.

The Munich residents are in good company with the ban: The Hiltl Club in Zurich started in 2014. Also in Munich, the Club Backstage has not accepted furs in the cloakroom since 2016, as has the Imperial Theater in Hamburg. Hahn also knows many clubs that no longer let furs in – especially in Berlin, Hamburg and Leipzig.

Bernd Ohlmann from the Bavarian Trade Association is critical of the decision: “Of course, wearing fur is less and less desired socially, but faux fur is also a fashionable trend. And with the blanket statement ‘You all can’t come in now’, I also pillorize my customers. “
