(Berlin = Yonhap News) Correspondent Lee Yul = Munich International Airport, which had been closed since the afternoon of the 1st (local time) due to heavy snow in southern Germany, partially resumed operations on the morning of the 3rd, but cancellation of about two-thirds of all flights was announced, causing inconvenience. This is expected to continue.

Dozens of Koreans trying to return home from Munich Airport were also stranded for three days.

Munich Airport said on its website and social media (SNS) that it would resume operations from 6 a.m. on the same day, but requested that passengers check whether operations are operating before coming to the airport as operations are limited.

A spokesperson for the airport told the Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ), “Of the 880 flights scheduled for today (3rd), 560 may be cancelled.”

Dozens of Korean passengers who had to stay at Munich Airport and nearby hotels because their flights were suddenly canceled are looking for alternative flights or waiting for operations to resume. It is known that a significant number of passengers moved to nearby Frankfurt.

Lufthansa Airlines operates direct flights between Munich and Incheon five times a week. Due to this heavy snow, two flights to Incheon were canceled on the 1st and 2nd.

A passenger named Hwang, who was at Munich Airport, told Yonhap News on the 3rd, “I slept inside the airport wearing a jumper, went to a nearby hotel late at night, and came back. The service desk is closed and in chaos.”

He said, “It seems like all morning flights have been canceled and replacement flights appear starting in the afternoon,” but added, “Flights are continuing to be cancelled.”

He also said, “The number of Koreans I saw at the airport today must have exceeded 100,” and “the number of 60 people in the group KakaoTalk room increased to about 80. Everyone was ‘sleeping out’ with their luggage unloaded.”

He claimed, “I was stranded at the airport and called the emergency call center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs several times, but no one answered the phone.”

On the 3rd, the Consulate General of Germany in Frankfurt said, “We are in constant contact with Munich Airport and Lufthansa Airlines. Yesterday’s direct flight to Korea was canceled and there is no direct flight today, so most of the passengers are changing their itineraries to transit through the Netherlands or Frankfurt.” reported.

With the news that the airport had partially reopened on the morning of the 3rd, a long line formed at the Munich Airport Service Center with passengers waiting to find out about alternative flights and the status of the resumption of operations. Passengers complained that it was difficult to contact the customer service center of Lufthansa, the main airline at Munich Airport.

Public transportation, including subways and buses in Munich, which had been paralyzed due to heavy snow, is expected to partially resume on this day. Rail traffic in the southern region, centered on Munich, Germany, is expected to be extremely limited until the 4th due to fallen trees blocking the railroad tracks due to heavy snow.

Train services from Munich to Austria and Switzerland were also canceled.

From the 1st to the afternoon of the 2nd, heavy snowfall of around 40 cm fell in southern Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, which is unusually high for early December.

BR24, a local German media outlet, reported that as of noon on the 2nd, 45cm of snow had accumulated in Munich, marking the highest December snowfall since regular measurements began in the 1930s.
