Multinational Companies Commit to Employing Thousands of Refugees in Europe

Multinational companies such as Amazon, Marriott, and Hilton have made a significant commitment to employ over 13,000 refugees in Europe over the next three years. This pledge includes Ukrainian women who have fled the war with Russia. The announcement comes ahead of World Refugee Day, which is celebrated on Tuesday.

More than forty companies have joined this initiative, stating that they will either hire, facilitate work, or provide training opportunities for a total of a quarter of a million refugees. Out of this number, 13,680 refugees will directly benefit from job opportunities within these companies.

Kelly Clements, Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees, emphasized the importance of these commitments, stating that each number represents a family that has left everything behind in search of safety and protection. With an estimated 110 million displaced people worldwide, including twelve million from Ukraine, this initiative aims to address the largest refugee exodus Europe has witnessed since World War II.

The recruitment drive in Europe is organized by the Tent Partnership for Refugees, a non-profit organization founded by Chobani CEO Hamdi Ulukaya. This organization connects businesses with refugees and will unveil the initiative at a rally in Paris.

Last year, the group’s first summit in the United States resulted in commitments to place 22,725 refugees. In this new round, Amazon takes the lead by pledging to employ at least 5,000 refugees in Europe over the next three years. Marriott and Hilton follow suit, committing to employ 1,500 refugees each. Other companies such as Starbucks, Adidas, L’Oreal, PepsiCo, and Hyatt have also made smaller pledges.

Ofori Agbuka, Amazon’s Vice President of Human Resources, highlighted the benefits of diversity in the workforce, stating that it makes the company stronger by fostering innovation, creativity, and different perspectives. The majority of the jobs offered by Amazon will be hourly positions in execution and warehousing centers, as well as transportation and delivery.

It is worth noting that earlier this year, Amazon announced the elimination of 27,000 jobs as part of a wave of layoffs following the hiring surge during the Covid-19 pandemic. However, these layoffs primarily affected paid office jobs, according to Agbuka.

The commitment made by these multinational companies to employ thousands of refugees in Europe demonstrates their dedication to supporting those in need and providing opportunities for individuals who have been displaced by conflict and war.
