Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Deputy Chairperson of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MULTI-FUNCTION) Anwar Abbas ask the security forces not to hinder demonstration college student at the State Palace on Monday (11/4) tomorrow.

He said the protesters took action to express their aspirations regarding the situation Indonesia is currently experiencing.

Several things that caught the attention of the demonstration were the increase in the price of basic necessities, the rejection of the discourse on extending the presidential term to 3 terms, and the postponement of the 2024 election.

Therefore, the apparatus is advised not to hinder and hinder the action which he called part of democracy.

“The MUI urges the government and all related parties to respect the rights of students and the people who take part in the demonstration by not hindering and hindering student groups or protest participants who will come to Jakarta, who will come from various regions, so that they can convey their aspirations properly,” said Anwar in a written statement, Sunday (10/4).

In addition, Anwar also appealed to the demonstrators not to be anarchists in expressing their aspirations. He asked the protesters not to be provoked, to be orderly, and to maintain a clean environment during the demonstration.

“To those who will be conducting demonstrations and also to all parties so that in conveying their aspirations it should be carried out in an orderly, not anarchic, and not violate the law and still be able to maintain a clean environment and not be easily provoked,” he appealed.

Anwar also asked the officers and law enforcers to be able to control themselves by not using live bullets and repressive measures when securing the action. He asked everyone to prioritize human rights.

“If this happens, he will leave a deep wound in the hearts of the people and the wider community and that is clearly not good for the journey of democratic life in this country in the future,” he said.

Previously, the All-Indonesian Student Executive Board (BEM SI) stated that it would hold a demonstration at the State Palace on April 11, 2022. The action was carried out with the main demand of refusing to extend the presidential term or postpone the 2024 election.

BEM SI admitted that he was not satisfied even though President Joko Widodo had ordered his ministers to stop talking about extending their term of office and postponing the election.

They also said they would press for a number of other demands, including the stability of prices for basic necessities, guarantees for the availability of basic goods for the community, and demands for the cancellation of Law Number 11 of 2020 concerning Job Creation.
