Much more than just cider in Langen

The city of Langen receives the award as orchard community 2021 for its marketing project “Siebenschläfer”.

You will encounter apple wine at every step in Langen: not only in liquid form, but also in creations such as apple wine mustard or Ebbelweipralinen. Under the brand name “Siebenschläfer”, the people of Langen are very creative about how apples from local orchards can be used and marketed. For this, there was the award on Friday as “Orchard Commune 2021”. The Frankfurt / Rhein-Main regional association awarded this prize for the first time.

The city of Langen looks after its orchards in an exemplary manner. At least that is what it says on the certificate that Mayor Jan Werner (CDU) was presented with on Friday. He also received a plaque “Streuobstkommune” and a trophy made from meadow wood, designed by an artist. In addition, there was a voucher for a further training course at the “orchard pope” Josef Weimer as well as a voucher for a day on which the mobile wine press of the Frankfurt Main-Äppel-Haus will stop in Langen.

Dormouse

In the year 2004 A joint label was created in Langen under the name “Siebenschläfer” for the distribution of orchard products. Since then, the apples from Langener and Egelsbacher Obstwiesen have been marketed under this name. Over the years, the product range grew.

The unusual name is due to the nocturnal animal of the same name, which hides in caves of old fruit trees during the day and was wild animal of the year in 2004. But there is also an old apple variety of the same name.

Marketing the apples under the trademark finances the maintenance of the orchards. ann

There are 15 hectares of orchards with 700 trees in Langen. In 1996 helping hands began to remove bushes from old orchards, mow the meadows, cut fruit trees regularly and plant new ones. The Offenbach district supported them with money from the nature conservation law equalization levy. In the long term, however, the maintenance of the areas from this levy was not possible. In 2004, the apples began to be marketed under the name “Siebenschläfer” in order to finance the maintenance of the orchards. The products are a little more expensive, so that after deducting expenses, money can flow into the maintenance of the meadows.

The Jörg Stier press from Maintal-Bischofsheim produces dormouse cider and cider in bottles, the Langen restaurant “Zum Haferkasten” produces the cider in barrels, and the Egelsbach fruit distillery Alexander Werner processes the fruit into schnapps. Joachim Bentrup developed the pralines and mustard for his tea shop in Langen, in the Egelsbacher Birkenhof farm shop there is “Siebenschläfer” jelly, in the Langen bakery Göbel apple cider bread.

“The Siebenschläfer brand is a unique selling point and worthy of all honor,” praised Claudia Jäger, First District Member of the Offenbach District. As the head of the environment for many years, she has followed the project from the start. Rouven Kötter, First Alderman of the Frankfurt / Rhein-Main Regional Association, admitted that he had already “eaten and drunk his way through the entire product catalog”. He noted that Langen was very successful in marketing the “Siebenschläfer” project.

The award from the regional association should be recognition and motivation for those who received and tended the orchards, he said. The award should “provide a tailwind to remain just as active in the preservation of orchards in the coming years”. In many municipalities there are volunteer harvest workers on orchards, but they lack structured support.
