New York, Jun 8 (EFE) .- The MTV music network will celebrate its Video Music Awards (VMA) in New York on September 12 and will pay tribute to the victims of the September 11 attack, of which the 20th years.
As MTV announced in a statement on Tuesday, the VMAs will be held in a face-to-face gala at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where they had originally been held in the previous edition before undergoing changes due to the covid-19 pandemic.
“The 2021 show will have epic performances by the biggest names in music and will bring together fans from around the world to celebrate the return of live entertainment,” said the company, which will follow sanitary safety “protocols.”
In addition, MTV added that it will collaborate with 9/11 Day, the NGO that organizes the official day of remembrance of the victims in the US, to offer commemorative activities that generate “awareness and positive action” during the week before the gala.
The VMA Awards, for which no nominees, presenters or performances have yet been announced, will be broadcast on televisions and digital platforms in more than 175 countries, with an audience of some 400 million households, the firm said.
Last year a ceremony different from the usual one was held due to the pandemic, with open-air concerts in various parts of New York in which the most prominent figures of music participated, such as Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Maluma or The Weeknd.
Lady Gaga was the main protagonist of the MTV VMA in 2020, with five awards: she received the artist of the year, the recently released “Tricon” for her success in various disciplines, and another three for “Rain on Me”, her project with Ariana Grande.
For its part, The Weeknd won the coveted award for best video for his song “Blinding Lights”, which also earned him the award for best R&B video, and gave voice to the claims about racial justice after the then recent murder of the African American Geroge Floyd at the hands of a white policeman.
