MTA Explores Air Conditioning Options to Cool NYC Subway Stations

NEW YORK — It’s every New York City subway rider’s dream, at least during the summer. But what are the chances of this happening?

The MTA released a document Thursday requesting information on how it can cool the nation’s largest subway system.

That’s right: there could be air conditioning in those sweltering subway stations. But how much does the transportation agency intend to spend and how realistic is it for this to happen?

MTA Chairman Janno Lieber poured cold water on any hope that air conditioning will arrive soon.

“It won’t happen tomorrow…we’re starting to think,” he said.

While avoiding the money issue, MTA executives are leaning toward the concept. After recent storms made flood mitigation a top priority, rising temperatures have also captured their attention.

Few stations like Union Square already have fans. But the MTA is considering special cooling panels that could turn on when the heat becomes unbearable.

There may not be an amount of money or a timeline to implement some type of air conditioning, but there is one goal in mind: lower the temperature in as many stations and platforms as possible, below 85 degrees on days when outside It’s 95 degrees or more.
