It is the day of the interrogations for i three stop after the massacre that took place on the Stresa-Mottarone cable car, where a cabin fell into the void on Sunday causing 14 dead. In the Verbania prison, the investigating judge Donatella Banci Buonamici he listened to the head of the plant Gabriele Tadini which already on Tuesday evening made the first admissions explaining that he had decided to place and keep the forks on the brake shoes that deactivated the emergency braking system, which did not engage when the pulling cable it broke. And it did, like almost “Habitually” in the last month, to avoid blocks of the cable car due to anomaly of the brakes. So, however, when the rope broke there booth number 3 it did not remain hooked to the carrying cable and flew away.
Tadini to the judge: “I put stocks, also other times” – Tadini – said his lawyer – “answered completely to various questions of the judge” and has “Confirmed his responsibilities”. The man, explained the lawyer Marcello Perillo, “He admitted to having put ‘fork'”. Tadini said he put the brake block too other times and explained that the anomaly manifested by the system were not connected to the cable, excluding connections between the problems with the brakes and those with the cable. “I’m not a thug. I would never have let people on if I thought the rope would break, ”he added.
PM: “Seeing the torn bodies did not convince them to speak” – For the prosecutor Olimpia Bossi and the pm Laura Carrara, who have asked for all the validation of the detention and of custody in prison, the choice of Tadini, as he himself clarified, was endorsed for economic reasons by the manager Luigi Nerini and by the operating manager Enrico Perocchi, whose interrogation is scheduled after that of the head of service. The two could deny having heard of the use of forks or avail themselves of the right not to answer. The prosecutor, in the request for pre-trial detention, censures their behavior because despite having seen the “Torn bodies” of the victims after the accident – summarize the prosecutors – did not show up in the prosecutor’s offices “to assume their responsibilities”. It will be the judge at the end of the confrontation in prison who will have to decide on the validation and on the possible precautionary measure. For the prosecution there are all the precautionary needs: danger of escape, of reiteration of the offense and of evidential pollution.
The rope and brakes deactivated – So far the investigation has revolved around two elements: the breaking of the hauling rope and the brake deactivation. According to the reconstruction of the prosecutor of Verbania, led by Olimpia Bossi, the cable would have yielded for reasons yet to be clarified but which – according to the latest hypotheses – could be attributable to the area of “Fused head”. This is the area where the rope is welded to the cabin: it is the part that receives the most stresses, more subject tousury and at the same time the one whose “state of health” is more difficult to control with the method magnetoinduttivo. The usury hypothesis – This operation, according to what has been filtered so far, should have taken place in November 2021. Was the cable already worn? This answer must be answered by i experts appointed by prosecutors, ascertaining the cause of the failure. Which alone, in any case, would not have caused the disaster. If the brakes had worked, in fact, the breaking of the hauling rope would have caused the tow to retreat booth number 3 – aboard which there were 15 people – a few meters but then the race would be interrupted. The use of forks instead it prevented the brakes from kicking in, launching the cab into a high-speed run up to pylon and on the fly along the slope of the Mottarone which ended with the crash which resulted in the deaths of 14 passengers.
The falsification of the newspaper register – The insertion of the forks, according to what Tadini declared during the first interrogation, was known to “everyone”. A sentence that prompted the prosecution to believe that Nerini was “completely aware of the usual recourse “to the deactivation of the brakes, a practice that in the opinion of the prosecutors” coincides with theentrepreneurial interest and economic “by the manager to” force the safety procedures, in order not to suspend “the comings and goings of the cabins from Stresa to Mottarone” with consequent consequences economic repercussions and the need for disbursements to finance the necessary interventions “. Tadini was also accused of noting the fake in journal log of the system speaking of a “positive outcome of the checks” on the operation of the brakes, both on the day of the tragedy and the previous one, despite having “heard a noise-sound characteristic attributable to the presumable pressure loss of braking system of the booth which repeated itself every two to three minutes ”.
The ‘censorship’ on Nerini and Perocchio – The brake problems would have continued from at least April 26, but two maintenance interventions had not been enough to solve the problem. Despite this, the accusation argues, the manager would have continued to keep it running by circumventing the malfunction by accepting a risk enormous, that of traveling without brakes, because certain that the hauling rope would not give way. Instead Sunday 23 May that’s how it went. And after the incident, the prosecutors write in their request for pre-trial detention, the detainees did not have a “resipiscent attitude”, presenting themselves “to the judicial authority to assume their responsibilities”. A fact that “assumes greater severity and relief “for Nerini and Perocchio who” were able to see the bodies of the victims tormented, lying on the ground thrown out of booth number 3 or stuck inside it “.
