Mother evicted from Porto city house sleeps with children in hotel

The mother and two children who were younger than Friday morning were evicted from the social house where they lived, in a “coercive eviction” from the Chamber of Porto, are staying overnight, until Monday, in a hotel in downtown Lisbon, in a solution found by the Parish Union of the Historic Center.

Joana Pacheco, 39, and her children, 8 and 12, are spending the night curiously in the hotel where the displaced woman works. “We hope that, in the meantime, you will find a solution, a rented house and that you will then apply to programs such as Porto Solidário or a house at IHRU, Institute of Housing and Urban Rehabilitation”, explains António José Fonseca, president of União de Freguesias , which is strange that, according to the victim, the Chamber did not activate the Social Security services during the eviction.

It is recalled that Joana claims the town hall where her father lived and where she also lived with her children during the period when the elderly person was sick until he died.

“The problem is that this right was rejected and she missed all the deadlines to complain”, says António José Fonseca. The fact that the citizen has a monthly income higher than that provided for in the matrix of the Domus Social Regulation prevents, according to the municipality, a possible relocation.

The night before yesterday, Joana was at the meeting of the Parish Assembly where her case was discussed and this provisional solution was found at the expense of the Board. That local authority also approved a declaration addressed to the councilor for Housing, Fernando Paulo, “in order to raise awareness of the situation”. In a statement, the Left Block condemned yesterday the action of the Porto Chamber which, he says, “acted in bad faith”.
