Most Poles want to build a nuclear power plant

Importantly, the vast majority of respondents – 83 percent. – decided that nationwide broad information and education activities are needed to provide the society with up-to-date, objective and reliable knowledge in the field of nuclear energy and energy. Only 7 percent. respondents decided that such actions are unnecessary and 10 percent. had no opinion on this.

The respondents were also asked if they had knowledge of plans to build nuclear power plants in Poland. 60 percent answered that they knew such plans, and 40 percent did not.

The research was conducted by IMAS International on a sample of 2028 Poles aged 18-64, carried out using the CAWI technique (filling in an electronic questionnaire) from July 31 to August 12, 2020.

At the beginning of September 2020, the Ministry of Climate presented a draft of Poland’s Energy Policy until 2040, which shows that nuclear units with a capacity of about 6-9 GW are to be built in Poland, which is to cost about PLN 150 billion.

In turn, in August 2020, a draft amendment to the Polish Nuclear Power Program (PPEJ) was presented, which provides for the acquisition by the State Treasury of 100 percent of shares in the PGE EJ1 company, which is to be responsible for the preparation for the construction, construction and operation of nuclear power plants in Poland. Currently, PGE EJ1 shareholders are domestic energy groups.

Nuclear energy is a stable, controllable and zero-emission energy source.

– The conclusions from the reports of the IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change) and IEA (International Energy Agency) clearly show the significant potential of nuclear energy to achieve measurable and radical reductions in greenhouse gas emissions on a global scale – said Michał Kurtyka, Minister of Climate.

The head of the climate ministry also pointed out that – especially in the context of the post-pandemic economic crisis – the development of nuclear energy opens up new opportunities for the Polish labor market.

– Nuclear energy is an opportunity for the Polish industry. It is an opportunity to develop specialized human resources competences, create new jobs and generate added value for the national economy – emphasized Michał Kurtyka.

Before the blocks are built, you first need to determine their location. Location and environmental research has been underway for several years, and its effects will probably not be known until 2021. Without identifying a specific location, technology providers will not be able to prepare their offer well.

Two of the considered locations for the first nuclear power plant in Poland are in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, in the Lubiatowo-Kopalino location in the Choczewo commune and Żarnowiec in the Krokowa and Gniewino communes. For years, local government authorities have been trying to participate in activities aimed at building a nuclear power plant. Local government officials complain about delays in preparations for the construction of a nuclear power plant.
