More than half of Germans do not think they will miss Angela Merkel, the country’s longtime leader, when she resigns as chancellor after Sunday’s Bundestag elections. This was stated in a survey conducted by the research center Civey (read Sivi).
52% of respondents indicated that they would not miss Merkel “maybe” or “definitely”. Merkel will be the least missed by supporters of the right-wing Eurosceptic party “Alternative to Germany”. In turn, 38% admit that they will miss Merkel, and the number of such people is higher among the Christian Democrat voters represented by Merkel.
The current German Chancellor will step down after almost 16 years in office. The Germans will go to the polls on Sunday to select her successor, and polls show fierce competition between the two main rivals, Christian Democrat Armin Lashett and Social Democrat Olaf Scholz.
