One in six Britons regrets leaving the EU

More than a quarter of Britons believe Brexit has fared worse than expected. Another 35 percent only confirmed their initially negative assumptions.

More than six out of every ten Britons assess Brexit negatively or worse than expected. More than a quarter (26 percent) believe Brexit has gone worse than expected, and another 35 percent have only confirmed their initial assumptions that the UK’s exit from the EU would be negative.

Such data follows from published on Sunday, December 26, the results of a poll conducted by the sociological institute Opinium, commissioned by the weekly Observer.

Only 14 percent of respondents said Brexit went better than expected. The Observer also notes that 42 percent of Britons, who voted to leave the EU in a referendum, are now disappointed with the results.

“We see that a very significant minority of Brexit supporters now say that everything is bad or at least worse than expected,” said Adam Drummond, an employee of the Opinium Institute.

Negative consequences of Brexit

The UK finally left the EU and the Customs Union about a year ago. Formally, Brexit took place on January 31, 2020, but until the end of 2020, a transitional period was still in effect, mainly with the same rules. Only by Christmas were London and Brussels able to finally sign a trade agreement.

Fuel crisis. How Britain started a deficit

In recent months, some of the negative effects of Brexit have become evident: supermarket shelves have become less full, and gas stations have at times run out of fuel due to a shortage of truck drivers.

Before Brexit, these drivers often came to work from Eastern Europe, but with the termination of the regulation on free choice of work in the European Union in Britain, this became impossible.
