Moselle. A € 40,000 religious tapestry mistakenly sold as a carpet

A few years ago, two pieces of a religious tapestry were mistakenly sold as carpets. The abbot and parishioners of Reyersviller (Moselle) would like to find them in order to complete the work and install it behind the altar of the church of the town, relates The Republican Lorrain. The two missing pieces are normally superimposed on the main bands, which are five to six meters high.

Funded by faithful

The entire tapestry is worth 40,000 €. It was donations from the faithful that funded it. “Knowing that the pieces were sold for a mouthful to be put on the ground is a horror to think”, the abbot said to our colleagues.

The work, titled Fugue, had been woven by hand by Claude-Marie Thibert-Boutou, gold medal of the Best workers of France in 1986. The commission of the sacred arts of the bishopric indicated this week that it could bring it back to Metz in case of need.
