Moscow orders mandatory vaccination after a sharp increase in infection

“We simply have to do everything we can to carry out mass vaccinations in the shortest possible time and stop this terrible disease and the deaths of thousands of people,” wrote Mayor Sergei Sobjanin on Wednesday.

The statement comes after a steady increase in cases of infection in Moscow, which reflects the trend in the rest of the country.

Authorities have struggled to get the Russians vaccinated – despite a mass campaign in December. Moscow is the epicenter of the corona epidemic in Russia, but only 1.8 million of the city’s 12 million inhabitants have been vaccinated.

The capital has registered 5,782 cases of infection and 75 corona-related deaths in the last 24 hours. Local authorities have therefore ordered mandatory vaccination of the service industry.

Last week, Sobjanin announced that everyone in Moscow who receives his first dose of vaccine will automatically be in the draw for a car.

Russia has introduced the vaccines Sputnik V, EpiVacCorona, CoviVac and Sputnik Light. The latter is taken as one dose.
