More than a thousand coronavirus infections in one day in Italy and Iran NOW

In both Italy and Iran, more than a thousand new coronavirus infections were added on Saturday, a sign that the spread of the virus in both countries has not yet ended.

In Italy, the number of infections on Saturday increased by 1,247 cases to 5,883 infected people in total. The death toll in Italy as a result of COVID-19 has risen by 36 to 233. On Friday, 49 new fatalities were added to the country, the largest increase since the start of the outbreak in Italy.

More than a thousand infections were also added to Iran, where the number of infected people rose to 5,832. Another 21 people in Iran succumbed to the virus, including the conservative parliamentarian Fatemeh Rahbar.

Several Iranian politicians and government officials have contracted the corona virus. On Monday, senior government official Mohammad Mirmohammadi died of the effects of COVID-19.

In France, it was announced on Saturday that the number of people who died from the effects of the virus had risen to 16, with 949 infections. Three people in the French parliament have also fallen ill, including two MPs and a catering employee.

In the Netherlands, 188 people have now been infected with the corona virus. Most new cases were found on Saturday in Noord-Brabant. Residents of that province with complaints such as a cold, cough or fever were asked by the RIVM on Friday to stay at home. At the beginning of next week, RIVM expects to say more about the distribution in North Brabant.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) in short

  • The virus spreads mainly through cough and sneeze drops that hang in the air for a short time. Anyone who shows no symptoms is hardly a risk of infection.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. However, this figure is falling due to all precautions.
  • The vast majority have mild (flu-like) symptoms.
  • Almost all deaths concern older or already sick people.
