More than 700 meteors were registered in the sky of Santa Catarina between the night of Friday (29) and the dawn of this Saturday (30). The phenomenon, caused by the Southern Delta Aquarids meteor shower, was recorded by the monitoring station of the Brazilian Meteor Monitoring Network (Bramon), in Monte Castelo, in the north of the state.

Meteors from this shower are likely formed by debris from Comet 96P/Machholz, a short-period comet that passes only 18.6 million kilometers from the Sun every six years.

According to amateur astronomer Jocimar Justino de Souza, a member of Bramon, this meteor shower occurs every year and is the largest that can be seen in Brazil.
— It is active from the 22nd of July until the 17th of August or so, with the best days for observation being between the 28th and 30th of July. That morning had the strongest peak. Probably, today these meteors will still be seen in large numbers — explains Jocimar Justino.
Last year, the monitoring station of Monte Castelo had already recorded about 400 meteors in a night close to the peak day of rain this year.
