The Ministry of Justice said that the number of confirmed cases related to the Seoul East Detention Center was counted as 748 yesterday.

A total of 1,689 detainees who tested negative in the second test were tested, and 233 more were tested positive.

The Ministry of Justice said it would take measures to ensure that confirmed patients with no symptoms or mild symptoms are quarantined and managed intensively, and if they are severely abnormal, they will be admitted to a dedicated hospital or suggested suspension of execution of the sentence.

In addition, citing the opinions of experts who visited the site, he explained, “There seems to be a greater likelihood of spreading infection by asymptomatic new prisoners after the third coronavirus pandemic than infection by employees.”

As the number of confirmed cases continued to increase, the Ministry of Justice transferred 345 of the confirmed prisoners to the North Gyeongsangbuk-do Second Prison in Cheongsong, Gyeongsangbuk-do yesterday.

The Ministry of Justice explained that they were all mild and asymptomatic, but complaints from residents and prison guards that there was insufficient consultation during the transfer process also emerged.

The Ministry of Justice pledged to provide prison staff with Level D-class quarantine suits to prevent infection and to strictly control access to prevent further spread.

However, there are criticisms that the Ministry of Justice failed the initial response and raised the situation, such as it took three weeks to complete a full investigation after the first confirmed case in the Eastern Detention Center.
