More than 500 people hospitalized for scorpion stings after storms in Egypt

Cairo – Torrential downpours caused flooding in southern Egypt, leaving three dead and more than 500 hospitalized from scorpion stings, state media reported.

Storms in Aswan province over the weekend forced authorities to suspend classes on Sunday, the governor announced Ashraf Attia.

The floods removed scorpions from their habitats and into many homes throughout the province.Attia said. He added at least 503 people were hospitalized with scorpion stings and all were discharged after receiving antidotes.

The Acting Minister of Health Khalid Abdel-Ghafar said in a statement that no one died from the bites.

Photos and videos posted on social media show flooded streets and damage to houses, vehicles and agricultural farms.

The Al-Ahram daily reported the deaths, citing the source as Ehab Hanafi, Undersecretary of Health for the Aswan area. He did not give details.

The storms have also caused blackouts.
