More than 500 jobs at risk at Logistics Nivelles: Kuehne+Nagel wants to move to Kampenhout and Kontich, bodyguard of management injured to hospital | Economy
UPDATEThe logistics group Kuehne+Nagel has announced its intention to close its branch in Nivelles (Walloon Brabant) in the autumn of 2022. That would mean the collective layoff of 549 employees. The group wants to continue the activities in Kampenhout and Kontich. The unions in Nivelles react furiously: “We are at war with Kuehne+Nagel.”

Since the takeover by the Kuehne+Nagel group in 2005, the situation at Logistics Nivelles has been particularly worrying. Financially, the site continues to suffer significant losses and the organization fails to provide an adequate level of service at a competitive cost. “Without prospects of profitability, the company can no longer continue to serve its retail customer (Carrefour, ed.),” it sounds.
–
An analysis by Kuehne+Nagel shows that a switch from the current regional organization of dry and fresh products to a national organization could offer solace. With regard to the dry products, the company would then work from the Kontich site, which has the best assets. In terms of fresh food, the choice is made for the new building in Kampenhout.

“Since the Nivelles branch cannot meet the challenges of the distribution of dry and fresh products, the management is forced to announce its intention to close the Nivelles branch by the autumn of 2022, and consequently also collective redundancies. to be considered for all 549 employees”, says Kuehne+Nagel.

Bodyguard injured in hospital
According to the trade union CNE, the situation at the site in Nivelles is “very tense” and entrances and exits are blocked. One person has already been injured. The union denounces the “sabotage” by the management, which has done everything possible to undermine the site in Nivelles, it sounds.
–
“The workers reacted very badly to the announcement,” said CNE trade unionist Didier Lebbe. “A bodyguard accompanying the management was injured and taken to hospital.”
–
At the moment, work in the location has largely come to a standstill. No more goods are brought in or out of the warehouse. “We are at war with Kuehne+Nagel,” says Pacal Strube of the SETCa/BBTK union. “We want to hurt their wallets and will organize a common front to close the other depots in Belgium.”

“Not even a chance to switch”
The socialist union denounces the transfer of all activities to Flanders. He also regrets that the employees of Nivelles were not even given the opportunity to transfer to one of the two Flemish sites. Something that also surprised Walloon Minister of Economy Willy Borsus (MR). “We must do everything we can to maintain the activity and save as many jobs as possible,” he said in the Walloon parliament.

“I am stunned to learn that the relocation of Logistics Nivelles within our country is accompanied by a collective resignation,” said Walloon Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo (PS) on Twitter. “I will meet the unions shortly. And the management will also be contacted. I call on her to reconsider the decision.” In any case, the unions plan to put the work on hold even longer.

The potential collective layoff of 549 workers is not the biggest job loss announced this year. This can be noted at the parcel company FedEx in Liège, where 671 jobs will normally be cut.
