More than 22,000 new cases of covid-19 are reported in New York | Univision 41 New York WXTV

The governor Kathy Hochul announced 22,478 new positive cases in New York State, while Mayor Bill de Blasio reported another 5,731 positive cases in New York City.

“A very, very shocking number and one that will certainly continue to grow,” de Blasio said in a special report on Sunday.

The mayor said that the omicron variant will be “a fast and temporary phenomenon” but that in the coming weeks there will be “a very, very large increase in cases.”

For her part, Governor Hochul urged all New Yorkers to get vaccinated.

“This is not March 2020. We are not helpless,” Governor Hochul wrote on Twitter. “Do your part to keep your neighbors safe. Get your vaccination or booster today.”

According to the latest data from the city’s Health Department, just over 70% of city residents are fully vaccinated against covid-19.

De Blasio also said the city will tighten up vaccination mandates. It will also significantly increase testing capacity, distributing high-quality masks throughout the city, and distributing more tests at home in high-volume locations.

Older people are more at risk

New Yorkers 65 and older or immunosuppressed should seriously consider not attending large gatherings for the next several weeks, Dr. Chokshi noted.

He added that families should plan Christmas celebrations around the most vulnerable person in any group.

40 new vaccination sites

To combat the winter surge and the rapidly spreading omicron variant, Hochul announced Friday the deployment of more than 40 new emerging vaccination sites across New York State.

These sites will begin launching Saturday and are part of a multi-week effort, in partnership with local county health departments and community partners, to build on the state’s extensive efforts to bring all New Yorkers to life. fully vaccinated and protected against the virus.

“The winter surge is in full force, but we are not helpless. We have the tools to combat this virus and its variants: get vaccinated, put on the booster and wear a mask,” said Governor Kathy Hochul.

“We will continue to work with local partners to make vaccines, boosters, and tests widely available as soon as possible so that all New Yorkers can protect themselves and their loved ones“.

Likewise, the governor urged that everyone be fully vaccinated “and receive a booster now, before the holidays, as it is our best defense against the virus and its variants.”

Two state-run vaccination sites in Queensbury and Binghamton are also offering free covid-19 testing as cases of this virus rise across the state.
