More than 200 deaths in a day from new coronavirus

The new coronavirus killed 242 people in a day in the Chinese province of Hubei, the epicenter of the virus outbreak. The provincial government reports this on Thursday.

The number of new cases rose explosively on Thursday: 14,840 people were diagnosed with the virus, local authorities announced. That high number could mainly be attributed to a new method that doctors in Hubei use to determine the virus.

According to the provincial government, 48,206 people in the province are now infected and 1355 people have died of the virus since the virus outbreak in Hubei. Nearly 60,000 cases of infection are known throughout China, according to the authorities.

The disease first appeared in Wuhan, the provincial capital of Hubei. Large parts of the province were locked shortly afterwards to prevent infections.
