The number of people infected with the novel corona virus continues to rise in Italy. There are now more than 200 cases. There is also the fifth casualty.
The fifth person infected with coronavirus died in Italy. The 88-year-old died in Lombardy, said civil protection chief Angelo Borrelli. The authorities had previously confirmed the death of an 84-year-old from Lombardy. According to Borrelli, the number of infected people rose to 219. Borreli warned of scaremongering – even abroad. “Our country is safe and you can come here with confidence.” All of the deaths in Italy were elderly, some with previous illnesses. 23 people are in the intensive care unit.
Italy had recently become the largest source of the new virus in Europe. Lombardy is the most affected region. 4 of the 5 fatalities and 167 of the infected are also from there. In addition to Lombardy, Veneto, Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna and the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region bordering Austria and Slovenia are also affected.
Since the first death on Friday, the authorities and government in Rome have taken drastic measures to control the spread of the virus. Eleven towns, ten in Lombardy and one in Veneto, were cordoned off. The Venice Carnival was canceled and games of the first football league and other major events canceled.
Because of the virus, an Alitalia airline was detained in Mauritius. According to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, dozens of passengers from Lombardy and Veneto were not allowed to get out. It is in contact with the Italian embassy in South Africa and Alitalia to help those affected. The plane started in Rome on Sunday, according to the airline.
Even after the spread of the corona virus in northern Italy, the federal government is currently not planning any border closures.
