In the municipality of Rotterdam, more than 9,200 people could be victims of the subsidy affair. This is about one and a half times what was previously known, the Rotterdam news site concludes Fresh concrete. Previously, the municipality reported nearly 6,000 affected parents.
According to Vers Beton, the figures are now higher because Rotterdam is using a new counting method. Until recently, only parents that the taxman considered possible victims were counted. A municipality spokesman confirms that it has been decided to add these groups to the total number of possible victims.
In a letter that the city council sent to the city council this week, it says that more than 4,700 Rotterdammers have been identified as victims of the surcharge affair. More than 4,300 potential victims are still awaiting recognition by the Revenue Agency. The other 175 Rotterdammers who reported themselves were not recognized as victims.
Migration background
The benefit story revolves around thousands of parents who received childcare benefits and were wrongly labeled scammers. Relatively many victims of the affair live in Rotterdam and other large cities.
Most of the cases involved single parents. Many of them were on welfare when the tax and customs administration started illegally claiming benefits.
