The VDAB (Flemish Service for Employment and Vocational Training) recently published its report on early school leaving, edition 2022. For a full year, from the end of the 2019-2020 school year to 30 June 2021, all 64,179 graduates. After a year, 4,213 of them, or 6.6 percent, were still looking for a job. According to the VDAB, this is the lowest percentage of job seekers in ten years. Job Seeker Share is the share or percentage of school dropouts who are registered as job seekers with the VDAB one year after leaving school.

Higher Diploma

To find a job, the diploma obtained continues to play an important role. The higher the diploma, the faster you will get started. The report shows that of all school dropouts who started looking for unskilled work from 1 July 2020, on average 23.4% were still looking for a job after one year. Of those who dropped out of school with a secondary education certificate or diploma, 8.1 percent did not get a job after a year. Among those who dropped out of school with a higher degree, the share of job seekers was 2.4%.

Year of specialization

Those who left school after a year of specialization found a place in the job market more quickly. This applies to both secondary vocational education (BSO) and secondary technical education (TSO). Of the BSO students who were looking for a job after their 6-year training, 12.3% were still looking for a job after one year. Of those who enrolled in the seventh year, it was 8.1%. Among TSO graduates, this was 8 percent and 3.9 percent, respectively.

Especially those who took a year of BSO specialization in the “Nutrition” study area found work much faster than peers who quit after the sixth year. For TSOs who dropped out of school, the same was particularly evident in the “Chemistry” field of study.

Higher Vocational Education (HBO5)

Those who did very well on the labor market were all those who dropped out of higher vocational education (HBO5). A year after saying goodbye to college, only 2.6% were still registered as looking for work. They did it almost as much as professional bachelors (2.4%) and masters (2.3%).

“Higher vocational training courses (HBO5) are practice-oriented and shorter than vocational degree courses,” explains the VDAB in its report on school dropout. “They prepare you for a specific profession, but they can also act as a stepping stone for a professional bachelor. The courses are very focused on workplace learning and therefore respond strongly to the demands of the labor market ”. Read more about dual learning here.

STEM

STEM graduates with higher and lower education (math, engineering, technology, exact science, applied science or ICT) continued to make their way smoothly into the labor market between the summers of 2020 and 2021. Especially those who completed their studies ‘Pharmaceutical Sciences’, ‘Architecture’, ‘Applied Sciences’ and ‘Industrial Sciences and Technologies’.

Those with a STEM degree related to health care or pharmacy have had little difficulty finding a job. This also applied to IT profiles, regardless of their educational level. Outliers were computer science graduates at the PBA and masters level. After one year, their share of job seekers was 1.7% and 0% respectively.

Healthcare sector

What already happened during the crown crisis has not changed yet: the health sector continues to struggle with a staff shortage. Anyone who leaves school with a nursing degree – whether at BSO3, TSO3, HBO, PBA, and masters levels – will very quickly find their way to the job market.

Women

The 2022 Early School Leaving Report also shows that women scored better on the labor market. Of those who dropped out of school in 2020, 5% were still looking for a job after one year. For men it was 8 percent.

West Flanders and Flemish Brabant

Where you live plays a role in finding work. School dropouts who lived in West Flanders found jobs the fastest between 1 July 2020 and 1 July 2021. Their job seeker rate was 5.6%. Flemish Brabant (5.9%), East Flanders (6.6%), Limburg (6.7%) and Antwerp (7.5%) preceded.
