More acute poisonings have been reported since the lockdown. That’s how you prevent them

In quarantine, you wash your hands more often and try to live a healthy life. For this you may be buying resources, such as hand disinfectants and vitamin pills. The only question is: do you handle these resources well? The National Poisons Information Center (NVIC) therefore reports an increased number of poisons, many of which are caused by small children who have access to the resources.

Hand sanitizers

You have probably bought disinfectants for your hands by now. These hand sanitizers contain high concentrations of ethanol (also known as alcohol) and / or isopropyl alcohol.

If your (small) child takes a sip of this or if the drug gets into your eyes, this can lead to serious complaints, such as confusion, nausea and low blood sugar. In severe cases, breathing problems and arrhythmias can also develop.

Multivitamin and minerals

Do you want to increase your resistance and do you take vitamins and minerals? Make sure that you do not take too high concentrations and that your child does not eat it. Fortunately, poisoning only occurs if you take large amounts of these supplements. Vitamin A, vitamin D and iron 2+ are especially dangerous. Complaints are often limited to gastrointestinal complaints, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Building and construction materials

Have you also started doing odd jobs at home? Then be careful with materials such as grouts, cement, polyurethane foam, glass wool and fillers. For example, you can suffer from chemical burns when your skin or eyes come into contact with wet cement that has not yet hardened. If uncured cement gets into your mouth, it can damage your mucous membranes in your mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach. So be careful.

Prevent poisoning

To prevent poisoning, it is important to keep substances out of the reach of children. Then we are not only talking about medicines, but also about the products in your kitchen cupboard, such as cleaning products.
